Against Urgency Culture

Museums are one of the last public spaces where you are allowed to do nothing—and that makes people uneasy. We’re conditioned to ask: What am I supposed to get from this? What’s the takeaway? What’s the point?

But art doesn’t ask for extraction. It asks for presence. The museum, at its best, is a refuge from urgency culture, they are places where the nervous system can recalibrate without explanation.

I think about this when Artemis and I find a patch of shade and stop walking altogether. No destination. No metric. Just breath and shared stillness. In those moments, nothing is being optimized. And yet, everything feels more humane. Art is not an answer machine. It is a breathing space.

And sometimes, breathing is the most radical thing we can do.
