Cold quiets my impulse to narrate. I do not feel the need to explain the walk or justify its usefulness. I walk because walking is enough.
Museums, by contrast, are explanation-rich environments. Wall text. Tours. Learning objectives. Interpretive frameworks. Explanation can be generous and clarifying. It can also crowd out experience.
Unlearning the urgency to explain is an act of trust. It trusts visitors to encounter works on their own terms. It allows meaning to emerge through looking, conversation, and time rather than immediate resolution.
In gallery teaching, this might mean asking fewer questions and listening more carefully to what emerges. It might mean letting an interpretation stand without correction. It might mean allowing silence to do some of the work that information cannot.
Care does not always require more content. Sometimes it requires restraint and confidence in the learning process itself.
