Following the Work Forward

Over the past few weeks I have been thinking a great deal about movement.

Not the fast kind that comes with deadlines or calendars, but the slower kind that becomes visible only after you have been paying attention for a while.

Walking with Artemis made that visible to me again. Each day we traveled a little farther. Each day her confidence returned a little more fully. What looked like repetition from the outside was actually progress unfolding.

Around the same time, my houseplants continued their unexpected winter growth.

New leaves kept appearing where I hadn’t expected them.

Together these small changes began to feel familiar in a different way.

Museum education has always moved like this.

Its most important shifts rarely announce themselves loudly. They happen through relationships, through teaching in the presence of original objects, through conversations that expand what interpretation can include and who it belongs to.

I see that movement happening now in many places across the field.

Educators are building partnerships that deepen community connection. Teachers are bringing works of art into classrooms in new ways. Students are encountering museums as places where their thinking matters.

The work is opening.

And when work begins to open, it invites us to follow it with attention and care.

I am paying close attention to where that movement is leading.

It feels like the beginning of something important.
